ARENA CORINTHIANS

Brafer was awarded by CNO to detail, manufacture, paint and assemble the steel structures for the Arena Corinthians. In consortium with another structures supplier company, Brafer manufactured 5,000 tons, including square and rectangular steel tubes.

The assembly of the stadium, 100% under Brafer’s responsibility, was a particular challenge. The project - innovative and dashing - had 180 meters spans and 60 meters cantilever trusses. The structure, in addition to its colossal dimensions, has no expansion joints and was composed by latticed trusses, beams and bracings, consisting of a single and continuous trussed set, its stability was only achieved after all its elements were fully assembled. The whole structure is supported by hinged columns in all directions and also at both ends.

During assembly, the structure was stabilized by bracings and temporary supports especially designed for this purpose. Furthermore, due to the unusual dimensions of the structural sets, the scissor trusses, for example, are 80 meters in length and 12 meters high, it was necessary to shape them on site by welding for further hoisting in sets of two scissor trusses.

For the 180-meter span structures, the preparation occurred in modules that were pre-assembled and welded on the ground and lifted supported by tower cranes. After finishing the hoisting and the connection of all the modules, the tensioning of the rods was done and later the tower cranes were removed, leaving the span completely open.

The Corinthians Arena hosted the 2014 World Cup opening ceremony.
